Hundreds of thousands of Americans are stuck on kidney dialysis and other stopgap measures when an organ transplant could dramatically extend their lifespan and improve their quality of life. At the same time, many organs from consented organ donors are discarded instead of being tested for viability and transported to someone in need.

BMI OrganBank, a medical device startup based in Winston-Salem’s Innovation Quarter, has developed a unique organ preservation system that has shown great promise for expanding the supply of transplantable kidneys and other organs through improved assessment, preservation and reconditioning technologies.
